DESCRIPTION
1
Arrive Albany
The Hudson Valley, a designated National Heritage Area, stretches along the mighty Hudson River and is heavily influenced by the Dutch, English and Germans who found refuge along its banks. Transfer to Rhinebeck, about 1 1/2 hours from Albany Airport, is at 3PM. If flights cannot be arranged to arrive by 3PM, a pre-tour night at the Indigo Hotel or another hotel near the airport (on Wolf Road) is suggested. Your hotel is Rhinebeck's historic Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn complex. The first scheduled tour activity is the get-acquainted reception at 6:30pm.
2
Rhinebeck
Continental breakfast is offered in the Garden Room, before driving to Hyde Park to explore the estates of some of America's notable landed gentry. First is Springwood, Franklin Roosevelt's beloved boyhood home, now a national historic site and home to his presidential library. Take a tour and enjoy lunch at the Culinary Institute of America, a training ground for chefs since 1946. This afternoon visit Frederick Vanderbilt's Hyde Park, 50-room mansion retreat. Like most prominent Hudson River families, the residence was only used for a few weeks during the spring and fall of the year. They wintered in New York City and summered in Newport. Certainly, the Vanderbilt's, starting with grandfather Cornelius, redefined wealth in America.
3
The Hudson / Purple Hall of Honor / West Point
The Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge, built in the late 19th century to link New England to the coal beds of Pennsylvania and the west, was abandoned in the 1970s. It is now reopened as the Walkway Over The Hudson and boasts marvelous views of nature's bounty. Also visit the newly opened Purple Heart Hall of Honor, which commemorates extraordinary sacrifices of America's service men and women who were killed or wounded in combat. The Hall of Honor preserves the stories of Purple Heart recipients from all branches of service, across the generations. Then a scenic river cruise highlights the spectacular scenery of the Hudson Highlands. Later, tour the United States Military Academy at West Point, whose roll in history dates back to the Revolutionary War. Visit the Museum showcasing two centuries of our military heritage. Your hotel, a National Historic Landmark, has been host to military leaders, dignitaries and famed performing artists throughout the decades.
4
Kykuit / Lyndhurst/Union Church
Enjoy an excursion through Sleepy Hollow country, made legendary by author Washington Irving. Tour Kykuit, the magnificent home to four generations of the Rockefellers. Luncheon at Sunset Cover overlooking the Hudson River and visit Union Church, endowed by the Rockefeller family and containing stained glass windows created by Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall. Your final visit is at Lyndhurst, the castle mansion of Jay Gould.
5
Boscobel / Monhonk Mountain Resort
Boscobel stands high on a bluff with sweeping views of the river and valley below. Learn about its Tory roots and the dramatic rescue efforts by Lila Acheson Wallace, co-founder of the Readers Digest, to rescue and preserve the estate. Continue to New Paltz and the Mohonk Mountain Resort, your peaceful and exclusive Victorian Castle retreat atop Shawangunk Ridge, amid acres of unspoiled forest. There is always something
6
