Travel Tips: Visiting National Parks

Tips for Visiting National Parks

Our national parks are open and waiting for you and your family to enjoy them this season.

Before you go, however, several preparations should be made. First of all, you should "know the park." That is, research it on the web or in your library. You can check the National Park Service web site at www.nps.gov. for full information on the park.

Plan what you want to see and do in the park before you arrive. Once at the Park's visitor's center, you can use their exhibits to refine that plan, based on your interests and available time.

Several points to consider before heading out to the park(s):

  1. Board your pet. Many/most parks do not permit pets on their shuttles nor in their lodgings.
  2. Be prepared for sudden changes in weather. As temperatures can vary drastically between morning and night-sometimes as much as 30 degrees-be prepared with layers of clothing.
  3. Bring plenty of drinking water for all.

Obviously, you should arrive early for the best parking options. Remember, others have similar family travel plans, and will be doing the same thing you are...but hopefully later in the day!

Understand the Park's systems, especially its transportation system. For example, Zion National Park has a new shuttle system and you cannot drive into the park in your private vehicle during peak tourism months. You will be required to leave your vehicle at the visitor's center. Plan ahead and fit your hiking time into the transportation schedule.
