Ocean-Going Cruise Lines These are the "megaships." Passenger capacity can range from 250 to over 2000. Guests may choose from a variety of accommodations ranging from Spartan inside cabins to large suites with balconies. These floating cities offer every amenity--from shopping to world-class spas. Some have putting greens; most all have swimming pools. Dining is customarily more formal in the evening, with early and late seating. These ships have multiple dining facilities onboard and complementary room service. Escorted land excursions are usually at an additional cost. Cruise itineraries are worldwide and range in duration upward from 3 days. Small Ocean-Going Ships These are ships capable of handling deep-sea cruising. Passenger capacity can range between 60 and 500. These may be either "tall ships" or conventional ships. They are multi-deck vessels, but may not have elevators. Amenities can range from very upscale to very simple accommodation options on the same vessel. While these smaller ships must meet all safety regulations, due to their smaller size, passengers may experience a greater amount of motion during their cruise. Dining aboard these vessels is a more formal experience than on canal and river cruisers. Itineraries range between 7 and 21 days.
