Nice: City Tour
Queen of the Riviera, Nice is a classic playground of the Mediterranean. There is a distinct light and feeling here that has attracted and inspired artists from Renoir to Matisse to Picasso. Nice continues to attract all types of artists today. In July, she hosts a jazz festival, drawing international performers from around the world. In winter, skiing is the sport of choice: Nice is just 60 miles from the Alps and is a convenient base from which to explore Monte Carlo and nearby medieval towns in the interior. Scenic roads (corniches) between Nice and Monte Carlo (12 miles) offer sweeping views of the sea and the coastline. The old town of Nice is one of the delights of the Riviera. Cars are forbidden here on streets that are so narrow that their buildings crowd out the sky. Winding alleyways are lined with faded 17th and 18th century buildings. Flowers cascade from window boxes on ochre and pastel-tinted walls.
