Itinerary
Day 1 - Phoenix/Scottsdale Join up at 2 PM at the Phoenix Airport for the visit to the Heard Museum, the nation's leading museum of Native American art and culture. Overnight at the fine SCOTTSDALE MARRIOTT SUITES OLD TOWN.
Day 2 - Petrified Forest National Park/Painted Desert
Pass Superstition Mountain, worshiped as the Thunder God by the Apache people, but also the location of the legendary Lost Dutchman Mine. Visit Petrified Forest National Park, strewn with fossilized trees over 225 million years old, and stop at the Rainbow Forest Museum to see fossil exhibits of rocks and dinosaurs. Explore the Painted Desert, an enchanting contrast of harsh dessert scrub tempered by delicate pastel colors. Overnight in Holbrook, the only place in the U.S. that still runs mail by horse. Day 3 - Canyon de Chelly/Monument Valley
Browse historic Hubbell Trading Post on the Navajo Indian Reservation before exploring the red sandstone wonders of Canyon de Chelly. Your Navajo guide unravels mysteries of the Anasazi culture's 1,000-year-old dwellings. Admire Spider rock before reaching Monument Valley for check-in at Goulding's Lodge, where John Wayne bedded down while filming westerns. Enjoy a steak cookout in Monument Valley this evening. Days 4 - Monument Valley/Grand Canyon
A Navajo Indian guide shows you a hogan before exploring the red mesas, canyons and isolated buttes (such as Totem Pole and the East and West Mitten Buttes) of Monument Valley by 4WD vehicle. You tour the heart of the valley, inaccessible by car. After lunch at Goulding's Lodge, drive to the incomparable Grand Canyon National Park for two nights on the South Rim! Look for the Colorado River, the blue ribbon winding thousands of feet below at the base of the canyon. KACHINA LODGE
Days 5 - Grand Canyon
Rise early for the excursion aboard a Fred Harvey coach to witness a dramatic sunrise over the rim. Then a Grand Canyon South Rim sightseeing tour is provided. The afternoon is free to explore the wondrous National Park on your own. Enjoy dinner at the famous El Tovar. KACHINA LODGE
Day 6 - Lake Powell/Bryce National Park
See the Glen Canyon Dam, built to tame the mighty Colorado River, and Lake Powell with its countless inlets and coves. A relaxing boat cruise to Antelope Canyon is included. This afternoon, enter Utah along side the Vermillion Cliffs and stay in one of our country's most striking parks, Bryce National Park. BRYCE CANYON LODGE
Day 7 - Bryce Canyon & Zion National Parks
Tour Bryce Canyon National Park to admire the steep valleys and ridges of multicolored layers of limestone and clay. Bryce's limestone hoodoos, contrasted by pine trees and enhanced by the sun, are astonishingly beautiful. This afternoon, visit Zion National Park with its monolithic "sculptures" and the pretty Virgin River, which has been carving and shaping the canyon for 13 million years as it winds its way through the heart of the park. Day 8 - Depart Las Vegas, Nevada
This morning enter Nevada at Mesquite and continue to the neon city set in the high Mohave Dessert--Las Vegas. Drop off is at Las Vegas Airport. Please do not book flights departing before 2PM. You may want to spend an additional day or two on "the Strip".
